History

In 1999 music programmer and organizer Edwin Rijs, together with entrepreneur Coen ter Kuile (then Paviljoen ZeeZicht) started the organization of a multicultural beach festival. In August 2000, the first edition of this two-day festival takes-off in IJmuiden with a handful of volunteers (including founders Paul van Toorn and Ilona Koek). Immediately it was a great success and the number of visitors had exceeded far beyond expectations. Later that year there were big plans for 2001 and they added one additional stage, and more theater. Also 2001 is a great success, there were more than 4.000 thousand visitors at the festival. End of 2001 plans where made to expand the festival with film and cabaret. Begin 2002 they decided to organize two festivals first festival The World At Your Beach with theater, music and cabaret and second Moulin Orange with film, food, music and drama. In augustus 2000 gaat de eerste editie van dit tweedaagse festival van start in IJmuiden met een handvol vrijwilligers (waaronder grondleggers Ilona Koek en Paul van Toorn). Het is direct een groot succes en het bezoekersaantal is ver boven verwachting. Later dat jaar worden er grote plannen gemaakt voor 2001 en moet er een extra podium komen en meer theater. Ook 2001 is een groot succes; er komen meer dan 4.000 duizend bezoekers op het festival af. Eind 2001 worden er plannen gemaakt om het festival uit te breiden met film en cabaret. Begin 2002 wordt besloten om twee festivals te organiseren. Enerzijds festival The World At Your Beach met theater, muziek en cabaret en anderszijds Moulin Orange met film, eten, muziek en toneel. Het wereldmuziek & theaterfestival 2002 is weer een groot succes, ook het Moulin Oranje concept slaat enorm aan. In 2002 worden door Ariane van Tuyll plannen gemaakt om de activiteiten onder te brengen in een stichting “Theater aan zee”. In 2003 wordt de doelstelling van het festival aangescherpt en wordt bepaald dat The World At Your Beach een multicultureelfestival is voor alle lagen uit de samenleving met een zo'n groot mogelijk bereik in leeftijdsgroepen. De Stichting World At Your Beach wordt opgericht, er komen dat jaar 12.000 bezoekers op het festival af.
